Celebrate Success for Compact Scholars

By: SDSU Division of Undergraduate StudiesSDSU’s Compact Scholars have had their eyes set on crossing the commencement stage since seventh grade. We need your help to provide 2016 Scholars with support for their graduation ceremony.

Who we are:

The Compact for Success Program began in 2000 as a partnership between the Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD) and San Diego State University to support college access and higher graduation rates for local SUHSD students. In 2006, the first class of Compact Scholars enrolled at SDSU. This nationally recognized, award-winning program has increased Sweetwater’s college-bound population by 120 percent.

What we do:

The Compact Scholars Program builds on the efforts of Sweetwater teachers who work with SDSU faculty to create a curriculum that helps students meet specific academic benchmarks that guarantee SDSU admission. Many Compact Scholars are the first in their families to attend college and fulfill their dreams. Compact Scholars participate in transformational experiences including studying abroad, internships, undergraduate research, and leadership development.

The current six-year graduation rate for the program is 65 percent, on par with the university’s overall rate.

“I think these students thrive because of a combination of factors including dedicated effort, long-term vision and planning,” said Janet Abbott, Director of Compact Scholars Program. “That individual determination and focus, coupled with support provided by the Compact Program sets the students on a positive trajectory from a very early age.”

Why we need your help:

Some of these high-achieving students succeed despite significant financial challenges. We're asking for your help to provide our 2016 Compact Scholars with caps and gowns for their graduation.

Your contribution of $99 will cover the cost of a cap and gown for one student. Even a $25, $20 or $10 donation will make a difference.

Do you remember the feeling of accomplishment you had at commencement as you walked across the stage in your cap and gown to receive your diploma? Please help us create that feeling for another Aztec for Life.
