By: SDSU Division of Undergraduate StudiesSDSU’s Compact Scholars have had their eyes set on crossing the commencement stage since seventh grade. We need your help to provide 2016 Compact Scholars with a community celebration in honor of their upcoming graduation.
Who we are:
The Compact for Success Program began in 2000 as a partnership between the Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD) and San Diego State University to support college access and higher graduation rates for local students. In 2006, the first class of Compact Scholars enrolled at SDSU; today, more than 900 students have graduated from the program.

What we do:
The Compact Scholars Program builds on the efforts of SUHSD teachers who work with SDSU faculty to help students meet specific academic benchmarks that guarantee admission to the university. Many Compact Scholars are first-generation college students who are on the path to fulfill their educational and professional dreams. Compact Scholars participate in transformational experiences including studying abroad, internships, undergraduate research, and leadership development.
This nationally recognized, award-winning program has increased Sweetwater’s college-bound population by 120 percent, with the current six-year graduation rate for the program being 65 percent—on par with the university’s overall rate.
“I think these students thrive because of a combination of factors including dedicated effort, long-term vision, and planning,” said Janet Abbott, Director of Compact Scholars Program. “That individual determination and focus, coupled with support provided by the Compact Program, sets the students on a positive trajectory from a very early age.”
Why we need your help:
Donations from Aztec alumni and friends of the university will allow us to provide the next graduating class of Compact Scholars with a community celebration in honor of their upcoming graduation. The goal of this celebration is to provide our soon-to-be alumni with a personal, intimate setting to recognize their accomplishments before they walk across the big stage at Viejas Arena for their official commencement ceremony.
This celebration is a culminating hallmark in a Compact for Success journey that officially began for our students when they were in the seventh grade. Your support will allow us to host 50 graduating Compact Scholars and their parents, as well as to meet ceremonial-related costs including but not limited to academic regalia, plaques, and awards that make this event such a memorable and unique celebration.
