Pow Wow History

In 2009, the Native American Student Alliance (NASA) decided to invite the community at-large to plan the annual Pow Wow. The limited number of American Indian students on campus, the need to attend to studies, employment and other obligations interfered with their ability to manage an event that takes year-round planning to carry off.

Some of the graduates from San Diego State University, many of them former NASA members, decided to form an alumni chapter to take over the task of managing the Pow Wow tradition. In May, 2009, the chapter was formed and began planning an impromptu Pow Wow. The event took place on the softball field on campus on May 25.

The 39th annual Pow Wow was held at the same location on Memorial Day, in 2010. The Alumni Center had opened on October 17, 2009, and the Pow Wow planning committee negotiated with the SDSU Alumni Association to hold the 40th Annual SDSU Pow Wow at the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center in 2011. The date, March 26, precedes spring break, and will be held the day after the SDSU High School Conference for American Indians.

The alumni chapter has a solid core of members who attend monthly planning meetings (usually the third Saturday of each month, usually outdoors at the SDSU campus. To be informed of meeting details, please contact the campus liaison, Preston Chipps, at 619.594.1681, or pchipps@mail.sdsu.edu.
