Alumni Center Inaugural Event a Hit with Lifetime Members

For the first time, the SDSU Alumni Association hosted a football pre-game festival September 17 at the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center. The event before the annual Sky Show game proved a hit with the more than 200 lifetime members, their families and friends who gathered on the alumni center’s back lawn to take part in the fun.

The festival package included food, parking, games and contests, trolley transportation from campus to Qualcomm Stadium, Sky Show game tickets and an Aztec for Life T-shirt for each Alumni Association lifetime member in attendance. Of course, the Aztecs’ 42 – 24 victory over the Washington State University Cougars rounded out the fun.

Westleigh Styer (’11) saw the festival as a hassle-free opportunity to entertain family and friends from Orange County. His parents, sister and a friend all stopped in at the alumni center before heading over to the game.

“Everything's organized and I like that,” said Styer of the festival set-up. “The fact that it's catered makes it a lot easier for getting groups together instead of shuffling people through the parking lot and trying to coordinate that.”

MEETING GREAT PEOPLE

Alumni Association staff members manned the T-shirt tent, helped with games and handed out raffle prizes. The event is one of several throughout the year organized for lifetime members by the SDSU Alumni Association.

“We’ve had pre-game events for basketball at the alumni center, but this is our first one here for football,” said Alumni Association Associate Director Tammy Blackburn. “If people like it, we’ll try more.”

Cynthia Nunez-Schweighart (’06) and her husband, Chris, were attending their second lifetime member event in as many months. Neither had ever been to a Sky Show football game.

“We went to the (August 27) Day at the Bay (lifetime event) and that was a lot of fun,” Nunez-Schweighart said. "So when we saw this, we wanted to go to the game and see the Sky Show. They had the whole alumni event (with) the trolley going to the game, getting the game tickets and then the Sky Show, why not? It’s pretty fun. I like it.”

Chris Parks (’92) said he also enjoyed the festival. A board member of the Business Alumni Network chapter, he recently became a lifetime member of the Alumni Association and chose the festival as his membership gift.

"I really am valuing the membership now,” Parks said. “I think (becoming a lifetime member) was a great thing to do because not only are you giving back, but you're also getting something in return. You're getting a chance to plug back into a lot of events that you wouldn't have gotten to otherwise and you really get to meet a lot of great people.”
