SDSU’s Math & Science Learning Center (MSLC) is a free drop-in tutoring center supporting students taking challenging STEM courses in math, chemistry, physics, computer science, biology, and statistics. We focus support on courses that are prerequisites for many STEM majors and that have a large enrollment, high DFW rates, and large equity gaps, helping students stay on track for graduation. In addition, many TAs and instructors use the center’s space to hold their office hours making the MSLC a community of learning where students can get all the support they need in one place.
*MSLC data demonstrates that visiting the center 7-13 times in a semester on average increases students’ GPAs by one letter grade.
The MSLC is applying to become College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certified so that MSLC tutors can earn an internationally recognized, professional tutoring certification. The training required by the CRLA will further develop tutors’ skills in communication and pedagogy, helping them become more enticing applicants for future education or job opportunities. Current tutors are extremely excited to be able to showcase their skills on their Resumes and CVs, and would appreciate your donation toward this effort.
The MSLC is also working with several other tutoring centers across campus to put on an inaugural conference focused on tutoring in Spring 2025 at SDSU. This event will bring together tutors from diverse fields, improving feelings of community across colleges and exposing participants to diverse ways of thinking about tutoring. MSLC tutors will be able to submit proposals for posters or presentations and practice participating in a professional conference. Your donations will help organize the event and pay for printing MSLC tutor posters.
Lastly, the MSLC would like to be able to celebrate and show our appreciation for our staff. Your donations would pay for MSLC-related graduation regalia for graduating tutors, allowing them to highlight their affiliation while walking, as well as birthday celebrations for each staff member.
"Working at the MSLC is more than a job for me, instead it has become a home. The MSLC is one of the only places on campus where I feel safe being myself, and it is also where I have found my closest friends at SDSU. The environment is friendly, welcoming, and supportive. I am graduating this May, and the hardest part is accepting that I may not be able to work at the MSLC in the future. The MSLC has helped me network, and make confident decisions for my career by talking with the peers around me. Additional funding and resources, such as a CRLA certification, would only strengthen the environment at the MSLC, and continue to help the center and tutors grow in a positive direction."

"Working at the MSLC has been an enriching and fulfilling experience for me this year. As someone who used to struggle a lot in math classes, I know firsthand the positive difference that knowledgeable and patient tutors can make. I feel grateful that I can be that positive difference in students’ lives and help them reach their full potential in their math classes."
